Elisa Sales Team

Sole designer supporting ~15 developers on one of Finland's largest e-commerce platforms, focused on webshop improvements, payment solutions, and EU accessibility compliance.

Elisa Sales Team

I had pleasure to work in the Elisa Sales team, as the teams dedicated designer for a bit over a year. The team is responsible for maintaining and developing one of the biggest e-commerce platforms in Finland, and I was deeply involved with the day to day work of this multi-vendor powerhouse.

During my time with the Elisa Sales team, I played a pivotal role as the sole designer supporting a team of nearly 15 developers in maintaining and evolving one of Finland's largest e-commerce platforms. With a focus on improving user experience and adhering to the Elisa design system, I contributed to both customer-facing webshop enhancements and internal tools utilized by Elisa shops and resellers.

Approach

Co-created project processes and working rituals with the team. Managed multiple concurrent projects including admin-side features and payment solutions. Conducted accessibility audits using screen readers and automated testing. Collaborated across horizontal user journeys involving multiple internal teams.

Outcomes

Redesigned shopping cart from single-page to stepped solution with improved performance. Completed complex European Payment Directive project requiring cross-team coordination. Initiated comprehensive accessibility compliance program aligned with EU regulations.

One designer, one of Finland's largest e-commerce platforms.

One of my main tasks was to help create design process and ways of working for the team, when it comes to service design from the designers point of view, and to create rituals and bring visibility of design towards stakeholders and to help the management plan service renewal projects. Through co-creation we planned our own project process, and started to implement it in our daily work.

The organization lacked established design processes and needed to improve visibility of design work to stakeholders while planning service renewal initiatives across a platform serving millions of customers.

"The biggest design challenge was creating conditions where good design could consistently happen."

Process-first, then pixels.

As the foundations of the larger framework was being set to stone, i had many smaller side projects. Many of them were done on the admin side of the webshop, and most of them were smaller single product projects, that, while on paper on the smaller side, still had multiple teams of stakeholders, as webshop usually had very horizontal user journey accross Elisa's internal teams.

I had the pleasure to work with lots of different payment related projects, and were deeply involved in planning the different user journeys and interfaces of the sales funnel. One of the big win of my time was cocreated with another design team in elisa, as we renewed the shopping cart from single page design into a stepped shopping cart solution, that performs much better than the old single page variant.

One other key win of my year in the Sales team was the European payment directive project, quite complicated internal process involving how you can offer products and services as a Elisa salesperson or reseller. The EU laws are quite complex and complicated, and required a lot of teamwork from multiple teams of developers, stakeholders all through the Elisa ecosystem, as well as subject matter specialist interviews with EU lawyers.

The latest and biggest push I helped with on the Sales team, was a deep dive into webshop's accessibility. The components in use were already starting to be outdated or werent in the design system, which mostly guarantees accessibility base level in the components. So with the help of the testers of the Sales team, we started to go through webshop content, one component and page at a time, and to do an accessiblity audit against upcoming EU regulations.

We utilized screen readers and automatic testing to figure out where the accessibility problems lay in webshop pages. We wrote down detailed reports and went through them with our team and business, to showcase what problems we had and how to tackle them, and started to form a plan how to get everything in shape before the regulation of the accessibility directive starts. The aim was to be totally accessibility compliant months ahead of the needed deadline, and the team committed to the journey, now fully compliant in accessibility requirements.
